About Us
Boston 2014 is a grassroots organization within the LGBT and non- LGBT communities of Boston comprised of avid community members, corporations and state agencies who are committed to the principles and legacy of the Gay Games. Many of the committee members have been involved with the Gay Games organization at different levels since its inception in 1980. This collaboration of individuals, corporations, and state and local government gives us the ability to promote, sponsor, and deliver an inclusive and profitable Gay Games IX.
Mission Statement
The mission of Boston 2014 is to host an inclusive and welcoming international athletic and cultural event that provides participants, spectators, volunteers, staff, and citizens of the region and the world opportunities to further their personal best, pride, and dignity as well as their respect and understanding of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities.
Operational Principle
The fundamental principle of Boston 2014 is that all activities shall be inclusive in nature and that no individual shall be excluded from participating on the basis of sexual orientation, gender, race, religion, nationality, ethnic origin, political belief(s), athletic/artistic ability, physical challenge, age, or health status.
Value Proposition
Boston, a progressive “hub” of innovation, provides old world charm and contemporary flair in a safe walkable city. Located in the first state in the United States to legalize same-sex marriage, it’s considered one of the most LGBT friendly cities in the country. As a premier international gateway, with a rich history of sports and culture, Boston provides all gay participants world-class athletic facilities and cultural institutions. Boasting big city attributes with a small city atmosphere, Boston has something for every visitor and continues to make LGBT history.
Values
Boston 2014 endorses the values and descriptions of the Federation of Gay Games.
Inclusion - Inclusion fosters an atmosphere where all are welcome to the Gay Games in whatever manner they choose, whether as athlete, artist, of supporter. The Gay Games are open to all, regardless of race, gender, nationality, sexual orientation, religion, ethnic origin, political belief(s), age, physical challenge, health status, or athletic/artistic ability.
Participation - Participation results in all individuals partaking fully and equally both in society and as athletes and artists, and supporters, whose lives touch or are touched by the Gay Games movement.
Personal Best - Personal best encourages individuals to express their athletic, cultural and activist skills, while empowering them to participate on their own terms. An individual’s realization and fulfillment results from the attainment of one’s personal best, more so than from mere competition against others.
Celebration - Celebration is a key element of the Gay Games sports, cultural and social events, designed to promote self-esteem, fun, and community.
Emancipation - Emancipation results from using sport and culture to passionately and unashamedly affirm the pride, joy, and dignity of gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgender people.
Respect and Honesty - Respect and honesty are the foundation of Boston 2014 relationships, sportsmanship, membership, and dealings with external stakeholders.
